During a recent visit by the Durham and Newcastle Association of Ringers, one member suggested retrofitting polyester tops to the ropes. He felt so strongly about the idea that he offered to pay for the work himself.
We now ring on ropes that are noticeably less elastic. Bells that were previously impossible to stand, now do so on the first attempt.
Our generous benefactor’s concern about stretchy ropes was rooted in retaining ringers. In his experience, many learners are lost when they have to start on badly going bells with elastic ropes. By improving the condition of our bells and ropes, we may have a real chance to reverse that trend.
