The Guild have 37 handbells – forming a 3 octave chromatic set of Whitechapel handbells.
These handbells are for use by Guild members at Guild events. They may also be loaned to Guild members for use at appropriate events. The following policy gives the requirements and responsibilities when borrowing the handbells:

Introduction
The Carlisle Diocesan Guild of Church Bell Ringers is committed to promoting a safe and enjoyable environment for all members. This policy outlines the guidelines for lending handbells to individuals while ensuring their safety and well-being.
Definitions
– Handbell Loan: The temporary borrowing of the Guild’s handbells by a member.
Policy
- **Eligibility for Borrowing**:
– Only active guild members may borrow handbells.
– Borrowers must be responsible and capable of handling the instruments safely.
- **Application Process**:
– Borrowers must submit a written request to the Guild Secretary (to: info@bellringingincumbria.com)
– The request should include the name of the borrower, their home tower, the storage location and address whilst the handbells are not in use, purpose of borrowing, duration, and any special considerations.
- **Approval and Conditions**:
– The Guild Secretary will review each request and grant approval based on availability and suitability (of the intended purpose of the loan).
– Borrowers agree to:
– Treat the handbells with care and respect.
– Return the handbells promptly and in the same condition.
– Keep the handbells within their storage case when not in use. The storage cases will be identified as being the property of the Guild
– Report any damage or issues during the loan period.
- **Loan Period**:
– Handbells may be borrowed for a maximum of 3 months.
– Extensions may be granted upon request.
– For loans to Guild members, a nominal fee of £5/month (or part month) past the end of the agreed loan period will be levied by the Guild.
- **Responsibilities**:
– Borrowers are responsible for:
– Safe transportation of handbells and associated equipment provided by the Guild
– Proper storage and handling.
– Report any loss, damage, or theft promptly.
- **Insurance and Liability**:
– Borrowers are liable for any damage or loss during the loan period.
– The guild’s insurance may cover accidental damage, but deliberate negligence is not covered.
- **Return and Inspection**:
– Borrowers must return handbells on the agreed date to the agreed location.
– A Guild Officer will inspect the handbells upon return.
– Any damage or missing parts will be the borrower’s responsibility.
Dispute Resolution
– In case of disputes, the Guild General Committee will mediate and make a fair decision.
Storage Location
The Guild’s handbells will be stored at St Michael’s Workington when not out on loan. Access is available via the Tower Captain.
