David Steel, Cathedral Tower Captain writes:
Saturday 29th November was a historic day in the history of the Carlisle band, for the first time in many decades a Bishop of Carlisle was enthroned in his own cathedral. Bishop Rob Saner-Haigh was welcomed to the cathedral door to the sound of the bells being rung by the Carlisle Cathedral ringers. Rounds and call changes were rung for an hour prior to the service. During the service, there were three minutes of rounds at the precise moment that the new Bishop was enthroned on his cathedra, sounding out to the city.
It was a long day for the 17 ringers who formed the band, three hours plus, but it was extremely satisfying to have played a small part in what was a splendid and joyful event and we feel honoured to have been there.
After the services we received the following message from Canon Benjamin.
‘Many thanks for this and for the outstanding work of the Bell Ringers. A highlight of the service was the building in silence listening to the Bells ring at the moment of the Enthronement.’
