SUMMARY:Cumbrian Codgers outing
DESCRIPTION:** Please note:  all replies to tony.ruberry@gmail.com **\n\nThe next Cumbrian Codgers trip will be on Thursday 19th October to the south Lake District.  The itinerary in outline is:\n10:00 – 11:00 St Michael Hawkshead\n11:30 – 12:30 – Holy Trinity\, Brathay\n12:45 – 14:45 – Lunch in the Talbot Bar\, Skelwith Bridge\n15:15 – 16:15 St Mary\, Ambleside\n\nPlease note that we have been asked for somewhat larger donations than usual\, so I will be asking for £2 per tower.  Since it has been £1 for such a long time\, I think that this is reasonable.  Please bring change if possible!\nWe will need to pre-order lunches.  The menu can be found here:\nhttps://www.skelwithbridgehotel.co.uk/talbot-bar/food/\nNote that some things on the main menu are only available from 5:00 p.m. but that ciabatta baguettes are available at lunchtime.  Let me know if you will be coming on the outing\, and also\, if you want to join us for lunch\, please let me have orders by Wednesday 11th October.\nI hope to see you then\, and please remember to reply to me and not David!\nTony

SUMMARY:Cumbrian Codgers outing 17th August
DESCRIPTION:This month’s outing is to Furness. There are three rings of bells lined up for us\, I am being slightly self-indulgent this month as these are all favourites of mine. \nLunch is at “The Brown Cow”\, Dalton in Furness – please be sure to let me have your pre-orders in time david.horne@the-hornes.org.uk / 07847 433117 \nIt will be an earlier than usual start for most of us – unless you’re coming from the “Cumbrian Riviera” that is – but I’m sure it will be worth it. Please do try to get along this month. \n10.30 – 11.30:  St John the Baptist\, Flookburgh (LA11 7JY) – TBC    The 8 bells with a 17cwt tenor require some effort to ring well but repay the effort with a beautiful tone. You are sure to enjoy ringing these bells and hopefully we will have enough “Codgers” to ring them well. They sound really nice to Stedman\, Grandsire or even plain bob (triples and major). NB: awaiting confirmation at time of writing. \n12.30 – 13.30:  St James the Great\, Barrow in Furness (LA14 5UE)   Until restoration\, this 12cwt eight had been practically unringable since 1999. After much hard work fund raising (and working on the installation) by the Barrow ringers and friends\, the bells were re-dedicated in March 2014. All the bells were refurbished by Whitechapel using a new method of tuning taking metal from the outside lip\, the first time for a complete ring of bells. \n14.00 LUNCH at The Brown Cow\, Dalton in Furness (LA15 8LQ)   The “Brown Cow” dates from the 1500’s. It is located just below the church\, two minutes walk away but at the bottom of a hill. It serves a wide range of food and some excellent beers. Menus are attached\, please be sure to let me know starter & main choices by Monday 14th. Don’t imbibe too much as we have 10 bells to ring afterwards! \n15.30 – 16:30:  St Mary\, Dalton in Furness (LA15 8LH)   This should be an excellent rounding off to the day. The 10 bells are a sonorous 21½cwt – Taylors at the height of their powers – and should be ideal for some nice plain courses or touches of Stedman and Grandsire caters. If you plan to come\, please take a look at Double Norwich caters\, it’s just major with an extra hunt bell (honestly!) \nI need your lunch pre-orders (starter if desired\, and main) by Monday 14th at latest please. \nAs always\, it will be very helpful if you could let me know in advance that you’re intending to come\, but if it’s a last minute decision\, please just rock up anyway!

SUMMARY:Cumbrian Codgers outing -Thursday 15th June 2023
DESCRIPTION:We’re heading off to Lancashire this month\, starting at the hexagonal tower of Hornby with its eight bells before moving on to the splendid ten at Lancaster Priory. Unfortunately St Peter’s Cathedral is having ceiling works done which precludes us from ringing there – but doesn’t preclude lunch at a favourite watering hole\, “The White Cross”\, alongside the Lancaster Canal.\nAfter lunch\, being June\, we’re off to Morecambe to ring on the pleasant eight at Holy Trinity. Wouldn’t it be nice if the weather plays ball – fingers crossed for ice-cream weather!\nMany thanks to Lynne Sydes for this month’s outing\, and the ever-helpful Cate Gardner. \n11.00–12.00 St Margaret\, Hornby\nA nice ring of 8 bells (10½ cwt)\, which I hope we will put to good use; The church is in the centre of this lovely village\, and is unmissable because of it’s unusual hexagonal tower. “The Post Office” is recommended for coffee & buns if you arrive in time (LA2 8JT) \n13.00–14.00 Priory church of St Mary\, Lancaster\nMake sure you arrive at the right church – that’s the big one next to the castle\, not the RC Cathedral of St Peter with the spire!) so that we can make good use of our hour here. Parking bays in front of the castle (NB: don’t forget to pay though!). The ten bells with a 30½ cwt tenor sound magnificent outside and are a “meaty” ring inside\, so be prepared. (LA1 1YZ). \nFollowed by lunch 14.15 – 15.30 at The White Cross\, Lancaster\nThe White Cross is an old favourite\, located alongside the canal close to St Peters. There is limited car parking there\, but you can usually find free parking in the streets around the Cathedral e.g. Balmoral Rd. Please make your lunch choice from attached menu and let Lynne know before Thursday 8th June latest as we have to pre-order (LA1 4XT) \n16.00–17.00 Holy Trinity\, Morecambe\nWe’ve rung at Morecambe before and always receive a warm welcome. Holy Trinity is a grade II listed church and was rebuilt in 1840-41 by Lancaster architect Edmund Sharpe\, to cope with the growth of Morecambe as a Victorian seaside resort. The bells are pleasant to ring (it has a complete Taylor ring of 8 bells with a tenor of 10¼ cwt dating from 1939) and there is seating just outside the ringing room on the balcony. Street parking can be found around the church (LA4 5PR).\nSpecial Methods: Grandsire caters and/or Stedman caters if there are enough of us.\nNames for lunch and menu choice to Lynne Sydes (email lynnesydes@gmail.com ) by Thursday 8th June at the latest please. No name – no lunch!\nFamily and friends (ringing and non-ringing) are welcome\, don’t forget this is a social occasion as well as a ringing outing.
